UK visa screening 'unfair on HIV'

The UK is discriminating against Kenyans with HIV by insisting that people who want visas be screened for tuberculosis, Aids activists say.
Inviolata Mbwavi of the Empowerment Network for People Living with Aids says those with HIV will be most affected by the directive.

TB is one of the diseases which often infects people with HIV, because of their weak immune systems.

The British embassy in Kenya says it is trying to halt the spread of TB.

It says the directive is already being implemented in Tanzania and Sudan.

From 5 February, visa applicants will be refused unless they have a certificate to show they do not have TB.

Medical experts say about 100,000 people in Kenya get tuberculosis annually.

"Tuberculosis is common among HIV-positive people and this means that they will not able to travel to Britain," Ms Mbwavi told the BBC.

"To us they are tactfully discriminating us and it's against international law."

More than 15,000 Kenyans, mainly students, apply for visas to travel to the UK each year.

Ms Mbwavi said Aids activists in Kenya will now launch a global campaign to push the UK to withdraw the directive.

I read this article and it made me wonder, what is wrong with the UK wanting to know whether foreigners enteribg there country are infected with HIV. What could possibly be so wrong about that?

One of the duties of any government i think is to protect its people and making sure the health of their population is not at risk is one way to go about it.
What do u think?

Social injustice? If they are targeting a specific race and ethnic group then maybe but you can't deny that there is a health concern when people allowed to enter another country without knowing their health status. I wonder if your response would be the same if this action was being taken by an African country. Its something we are not used to but that's where the world is headed.

If people are willing to blow themselves up, how long to do you think it will take such people to infect themselves with deadly diseases so they can infect others?

Ash, there is no mention or suggestion in the article that Indians or other people aren't being checked either.
I also dissagree with you saying there is no comparison between terrorism/ fighting by blowing yourself or spreading illness, the intensions and results are the same.

mkakati, what would you call the killing , wounding of innocent civillians i.e kids, women with armed troops with heavy artilleries: missiles, grenades but the other side are defenceless what do you want them to use?

lets not go out of topic applies to jonny too! uk visa screening against "HIV"

Again this is sterotyping a particular group people how about bringing awareness and helping everyone leave with "WITH" hence them accepting what they've got!

Ash it seems this issue is personal to you so I hope I haven’t offended you.
No one said that the killing going on in the middle east are acceptable.
You said they are stereotyping people. Please explain?

Here is my one question to Jonnny and Mkakati which I believe will draw us close to Ash; are Americans, Canadians, Europeans and the likes required to take the test as well? Thanks.

I don't know if this screening policy is or isn't applied exclusively to a certain group of individuals.
If its being applied to everyone or every group then I think it's ok but if its being applied to a specific group of individuals then that is "unacceptable" segregation and maybe even racism.

my view on something may be right with posibillity of being wrong and vice versa and so applies to everyone else.

that means sometimes we have to agree 2 disagree! Smile

nothing personal and no offence taken!

What i meant by steoreotyping is: people have to be accepted in society regardless their conditions in sickness or health, colour race etc.

Watch how far this goes!
